Should I just use my washing machine or....?

I have a white Trevor Linden jersey that is getting dirty. I want to wash it and I read on the internet that you just need to turn it inside out and throw it in the washer then air dry it. But, wouldn't that kind of wreck the name and numbers and patches and sh!t? This is one of my favourite jerseys that I own and I don't want anything to happen to it...So, based on your experiences (if you have any), will it be okay in the washer, or should I just take it to a dry cleaners, just to be safe?
